Sitemap Success: When Two Domains Lead to Zero Indexed Pages
Imagine having a functional website, publishing valuable content, and expecting customers to find you through Google—only to discover that some or all of your pages aren't being indexed.
That's exactly what happened with a client we recently worked with.
The website had two domains, and everything appeared to be running normally. However, Google had been rejecting the sitemap associated with one of the domains for months.
The client wasn't aware.
The result was a serious SEO visibility problem: zero indexed pages on one of the domains.
How Can This Happen?
Managing multiple domains for the same website can create technical SEO complications when the configurations aren't properly synchronized.
Search engines need clear signals about which domain is the primary version of a website and which URLs should be crawled and indexed.
Issues can arise when there are inconsistencies involving:
- XML sitemaps
- Domain redirects
- Canonical URLs
- Robots.txt
- Google Search Console properties
- DNS and domain configuration
- HTTPS versions of the website
- Duplicate or conflicting domain signals
When these elements don't work together, Google may have difficulty determining which version of your website it should prioritize.
The Sitemap Problem
An XML sitemap helps search engines discover important pages on a website.
But simply creating a sitemap isn't enough.
The sitemap needs to be accessible, correctly configured, submitted to the appropriate Google Search Console property, and consistent with the domain and URL structure Google is expected to index.
In this case, the sitemap discrepancy went unnoticed for months.
That meant the website wasn't receiving the indexing visibility the client expected.
What We Discovered
Our technical audit revealed that the two domains were not properly aligned from an indexing perspective.
We identified the sitemap issue and examined the domain configuration to determine why Google wasn't processing the affected sitemap as expected.
Rather than treating the symptom alone, we looked at the broader technical setup.
The Solution
We implemented the necessary corrections to help bring the domains and sitemap configuration back into alignment.
The goal wasn't simply to "fix the sitemap."
The bigger objective was to ensure that:
1. Google could properly access the website.
2. The correct sitemap was available.
3. Domain signals were consistent.
4. Search engines could better understand the preferred version of the website.
5. Important pages had a clearer path toward being crawled and indexed.
Why Technical SEO Matters
A website can look perfect to a human visitor and still have serious problems from a search engine's perspective.
Your customers may be able to open your website directly, while Google may struggle to discover or index some of your pages.
That's why technical SEO audits are important.
They can uncover issues that aren't immediately visible from the front end of your website.
And in a competitive digital market like Nigeria, losing search visibility can also mean losing potential customers and leads.
